Operational readiness

Train around the real formats, tasks and escalation boundaries.

Machine handover should identify what each role is authorised and competent to do. Operators need more than a demonstration of the start button: they need supervised practice with setup, label loading, first-off approval, normal stops, cleaning and the faults they are expected to recognise.

Training areaOperator outcomeRecord
Safe useUnderstands guards, interlocks, emergency stops, normal access, prohibited actions and site isolation arrangements.Attendance and role-specific authorisation or supervision requirements.
Start-up and shutdownCompletes pre-use checks, selects the correct product setup and leaves the machine in the defined safe condition.Approved start-up/shutdown checklist.
Label-roll loadingConfirms label identity and unwind direction, threads the documented path and sets waste take-up without bypassing safeguards.Format sheet and supervised demonstration.
Format changeAdjusts authorised guides, sensors, head position and recipe/settings, then obtains first-off approval.Completed changeover and first-off record.
Cleaning and routine careUses approved methods and knows which tasks require maintenance or isolation.Cleaning schedule and maintenance boundary.
Fault responseRecognises common symptoms, makes only authorised checks and escalates recurring or safety-related faults.Fault reporting route and escalation contacts.

Use the customer's actual materials

Training is more useful when operators load the intended rolls, set representative containers and complete at least one meaningful changeover. Include the difficult format rather than demonstrating only the easiest bottle. If production materials are unavailable, label the exercise as familiarisation and schedule a production-equivalent follow-up.

Handover documents

  • Operating and maintenance information supplied for the project.
  • Format records, recipes or reference settings.
  • Label-roll and web-path diagrams.
  • Approved sample or placement standard.
  • Cleaning and inspection schedule.
  • Spare-parts and support contact information.
  • Training record showing names, roles, date, formats covered and any restrictions.

Competence is task-specific

Attendance alone does not demonstrate competence for every task. The employer should decide who may operate, change formats, clean, maintain, modify controls or enter guarded areas, taking account of the machine instructions and site risk assessment. Refresher training may be needed after long gaps, significant changes or repeated unsafe or incorrect use.

Use the changeover checklist, troubleshooting guide and commissioning checklist as role-specific training aids.

Define the people, formats and tasks before handover.

Tell Lancing which operators and maintenance roles need instruction and which product formats must be covered.
