Format range

Can one bottle labelling machine handle multiple bottle and label formats?

One bottle labelling machine can often handle a defined family of formats when the containers use a compatible handling principle and remain within the machine configuration. The practical range is limited by bottle geometry, stability, label position, label-roll dimensions, sensing, access and changeover complexity. It should be proven against representative formats rather than assumed from a broad size range.

Which format differences usually require a changeover?

Changes in bottle width, diameter, height, label position, roll width, unwind direction or sensing may require guides, label head, sensors and wipe-down parts to be reset. A change from round wraparound labelling to panel-based front-and-back labelling may require a different handling principle rather than a normal adjustment.

List each adjustment and identify whether it is tool-less, recipe-based, referenced by a scale or dependent on a dedicated change part. That list is more useful than a single claim that the machine is adjustable.

Can one labeller handle round and flat bottles?

It may be possible only when the machine is specifically configured for both handling methods. Round bottles normally need controlled rotation, while flat or oval bottles need panel orientation and side stabilisation. A system optimised for one method should not be assumed to perform the other without a demonstrated configuration.

When both shapes matter, supply samples and define the label arrangement for each. The comparison should include changeover time, operator steps and any parts that must be fitted or removed.

How do label width, length and roll construction affect format range?

The label head and web path must accommodate the required web width, roll diameter, core, label pitch and dispense length. A different face stock, liner or clear-label construction can also require another sensor setup. A bottle may fit mechanically while its label roll sits outside the proven range.

Include every production label specification in the format matrix, not only label dimensions. The roll-specification handover guide identifies the fields to control.

What makes a changeover repeatable?

A repeatable changeover has a defined sequence, physical reference points, recorded settings, controlled parts and a first-off approval method. Electronic recipes are helpful for stored values, but mechanical positions still need reliable references. Operators should be able to identify the correct label roll and return every adjustable point to a known starting condition.

Use the existing changeover checklist to structure setup and sign-off.

When does broad format capability make a machine harder to operate?

A very broad range can increase adjustment travel, change parts, sensor positions and opportunities for incorrect setup. Compromises made to cover extreme formats may also reduce access or make the normal format less straightforward. The best range is the smallest range that covers real production and credible planned products.

Separate must-have formats from possible future ideas. Where an outlier uses a different labelling principle, a dedicated or alternative machine may be easier to validate and operate.

How should future formats be included in the quotation?

Provide dimensions, drawings, expected label positions and material information for each credible future format. Ask the supplier to state whether it is included in the base setup, requires an option, needs change parts or remains subject to sample testing. Do not treat an undefined future range as accepted capability.
