How do you integrate a bottle labeller with fillers, cappers, coding and inspection?

Integrating a bottle labeller requires a controlled product path, agreed machine-to-machine signals and enough space for bottle separation, label application, inspection and fault recovery. The labeller position should be chosen from bottle condition and process sequence, while the control philosophy should define how every machine responds to stops, queues and rejected packs.

Where should the labeller sit in relation to filling and capping?

The bottle should reach the labeller stable, closed where required and with a label area suitable for adhesion. Labelling after filling and capping may improve bottle rigidity and avoid later equipment scuffing the label, but it can introduce condensation, residue or a higher centre of gravity. The correct position depends on the product, closure, container and downstream handling.

How is bottle spacing created and maintained?

The line must separate bottles so the product sensor and label cycle can treat each pack individually. Spacing may be created by upstream timing, metering devices, speed differences or the labeller's own handling system. It must remain stable through conveyor transfers and during changes in upstream flow.

Back-pressure into the label zone can remove spacing and rotate or squeeze bottles. The layout should provide a controlled place for accumulation or a stop signal before that happens.

What control signals should be agreed between machines?

Agree run-permit, ready, fault, stop and product-flow behaviour for each relevant interface. Define which machine is the line master, how emergency stops are handled within the project scope and what happens to bottles already between machines when a fault occurs. Signal names alone are not enough; the operating sequence must be described.

Controls and safety responsibilities require an application-specific engineering review. They should be confirmed in the line functional description and tested during commissioning.

Where should coding and inspection take place?

Place coding where the intended surface is accessible and stable, and place inspection where the camera or sensor can see the required label, code or barcode without glare or obstruction. Inspection after final wipe-down can verify the completed pack, while an earlier check may be useful for label presence or web condition.

What happens when a downstream machine stops?

The line should prevent bottles backing into the controlled application area or falling at a transfer. Depending on the layout, the labeller may finish its current cycle, stop accepting new bottles and signal upstream equipment to pause. Accumulation can provide recovery time, but it must suit bottle stability and available space.

Test planned and unplanned stops with representative packs. A line that runs well at steady state can still create mislabelling during recovery if product spacing is lost.

Which layout and sample information is needed before integration is quoted?

Provide a scaled layout or measured sketch, conveyor height and direction, machine footprints, access restrictions, product flow, control information and the intended positions of coding, inspection and rejection. Supply bottles in production condition and identify the fastest, slowest and least stable formats.

  • Conveyor widths, heights, transfers, speeds and available straight length.
  • Bottle dimensions, fill state, closures and normal spacing.
  • Label-roll and code requirements, including inspection criteria.
