What affects bottle labelling accuracy and repeatability?

Bottle labelling accuracy depends on how consistently the container is presented, how consistently the label is dispensed and how placement is measured. Repeatability can be limited by bottle variation, label-roll variation, product movement, setup and the chosen datum. A meaningful performance statement therefore needs an agreed pack, label, running condition and measurement method.

What is the difference between placement accuracy and repeatability?

Placement accuracy describes how close the label is to the specified target position, while repeatability describes how closely successive labels cluster around one another. A machine can be repeatable but consistently offset from the target, or it can average near the target while individual packs vary too widely. Both should be checked separately.

The distinction matters during setup: an offset may be corrected by adjusting the application point, whereas poor repeatability requires investigation of bottle control, sensing, web tracking or material variation.

Which bottle features should be used as the measurement datum?

Use a repeatable moulded or physical feature that exists on every production bottle and can be measured consistently. Suitable datums may include the base, a defined panel edge, a shoulder feature or a controlled seam when that seam is itself repeatable. Avoid relying on a visually convenient feature that moves between moulds or batches.

For round bottles, rotational position may also need a reference when artwork must align with a cap, seam or handle. The datum should be shown on the acceptance drawing or approved sample.

How do bottle variation and label-roll variation affect repeatability?

Differences in diameter, height, taper, panel position, base flatness or rigidity change how bottles contact guides and wipe-down parts. On the label roll, variation in gap, pitch, die cut, liner tension or label release can change the dispense point. The machine can only control what it can physically reference and sense.

Trials should include samples from normal production variation, especially the extremes. A result from one ideal bottle and one short sample roll does not establish the behaviour of the full supply.

Why can line speed, spacing and bottle control change label position?

Label dispense is timed against a moving product. If bottle speed, spacing or orientation changes through the application zone, the meeting point between label and container also changes. Slipping belts, conveyor transfers, back-pressure and unstable bottles can therefore appear as a label-head accuracy problem.

How should accuracy be checked during a sample trial?

Agree the datum and method before the run, approve a first-off sample, then measure a sequence of packs taken during stable operation and after relevant changeovers. Record the bottle and label-roll identities, settings and any rejected packs. The sample size and acceptance threshold must be project-specific rather than borrowed from an unrelated machine claim.

Record vertical, horizontal or rotational position from the agreed datum.

Record the spread

Retain individual results so repeatability is visible rather than reporting only an average.

Test the difficult formats

Include variation in bottle, fill, label material and changeover that reflects production.

Keep approved evidence

Photographs, marked samples and setup records create a usable reference for site acceptance.

When is a machine adjustment not the real solution?

Do not keep moving the sensor or label head when the underlying cause is an inconsistent bottle, damaged liner, changing adhesive release, condensation, uncontrolled infeed or an unsuitable label shape. Repeated adjustment can move the average position without improving repeatability and may create a new fault on the next batch.
