Label performance

Adhesion starts with the complete pack condition.

A labeller can place and wipe a pressure-sensitive label, but it cannot compensate for every unsuitable adhesive, contaminated surface, severe compound curve or unstable container. Evaluate the label construction, bottle material and production environment together.

Build an adhesion trial that represents production

Use bottles from the intended supply, filled and closed where that changes rigidity or temperature. Apply labels from a production-equivalent roll, then inspect immediately and after the dwell period agreed with the label supplier or project team. Include storage or handling conditions that could reveal edge lift, tunnelling or loss of adhesion. Do not publish a universal dwell time or adhesion value without verified label-manufacturer data and an agreed test method.

Evidence to send

  • Bottle material and supplier reference where available.
  • Photographs showing panel shape, seams, taper and the intended label position.
  • Label face stock, adhesive and liner information from the converter.
  • Production temperatures, condensation or cleaning conditions.
  • Rejected and acceptable labelled samples, marked with the time after application.
  • A video showing the first point of contact and wipe-down if the fault occurs during application.

When to involve the label converter

Ask the converter to confirm the adhesive and face stock for the substrate, curvature, storage and end-use environment. Machine adjustment should not be used to disguise a construction that is unsuitable for the bottle. Equally, a suitable label can still fail if the bottle arrives wet, contaminated or unsupported.
